The new Toyota Aygo X Hybrid introduces full hybrid power to the A-segment for the first time, extending electrification to the smallest and most accessible vehicle in Toyota’s range, without compromising its signature condensed crossover look. The powertrain, today available in Yaris and Yaris Cross, will fully replace the 1.0-litre petrol engine of its predecessor. Its higher power and sharper acceleration will deliver a more energetic and exciting drive. Adapting Aygo X to accommodate the hybrid components while preserving the car’s 2,430mm wheelbase and boot space required innovative packaging. For the first time in a Toyota hybrid, the two stacks of battery cells are positioned alongside each other across the width of the floor in a longitudinal lay-out beneath the rear seats. Other Toyota hybrids use a parallel configuration, which requires a longer space. Smart packaging also sees the auxiliary battery moved under the load compartment, avoiding any loss of storage capacity. To accommodate the larger hybrid powertrain, the front overhang has been extended by 76mm, achieved through packaging optimisation while preserving the Aygo X’s proportions. The benefits of full hybrid technology make the new Aygo X Hybrid an ideal partner for modern city driving, with expected class-leading CO2 emissions of 86g/km. That ensures it complies with low emission zone requirements while the extra power makes longer drives more comfortable and stress-free. Overall system power output is increased by 44 horsepower compared to the previous non-hybrid version, reaching a maximum of 116 hp and enabling 0-100 km/h acceleration in less than 10 seconds. The Aygo X Hybrid has nimble handling for urban streets thanks to its GA-B platform and the low positioning of the hybrid battery, which contribute to a low centre of gravity and a highly rigid body. A 4.7m turning radius is ideal for manoeuvring with confidence in confined spaces. The car is also quieter and has a smoother to ride thanks to new noise-damping components, including dash silencers, bonnet insulation and an engine underbody cover, combined with an updated exhaust system and silencer. Further noise reduction measures are featured on higher grade models, including thicker window glass and additional soundproofing throughout the body. Safety is a priority for all Toyotas, large and small, so the new Aygo X Hybrid also benefits from a comprehensive Toyota Safety Sense safety and driver assistance package. This includes an enhanced Pre-Collision System, Lane Trace Assist and Road Sign Assist features, as well as a new Emergency Driving Stop System and Proactive Driving Assist. For the first time on an Aygo X, over the air software updates will ensure safety systems are optimised. Do you like it?
