The ANCAP technical report for the 2026 Toyota Hilux (model series AN2) covers all variants except the Rugged X, and applies to vehicles sold from November 2025 in New Zealand and December 2025 in Australia. The assessed safety performance is strong overall: Adult Occupant Protection scored 84% (33.96/40), Child Occupant Protection 89% (44.00/49, dual cab features/scores only), Vulnerable Road User Protection 82% (52.16/63), and Safety Assist 82% (14.83/18). Standard equipment includes dual frontal airbags, side chest and head-protecting airbags, a driver knee airbag, plus a centre airbag, alongside Toyota Safety Sense with autonomous emergency braking across multiple scenarios and lane support functions. In crash testing, the Hilux passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test, with generally good protection, though the driver’s chest and lower legs were rated adequate and the driver’s neck was marginal in the full-width frontal test; side impact performance was good, and far-side protection and the centre airbag helped manage occupant-to-occupant interaction. A key caveat is MPDB “compatibility”: the Hilux’s front structure presented a higher risk to occupants of an oncoming vehicle, triggering the maximum penalty in that section. For child protection, dynamic results were good, and dual cab variants provide ISOFix and top tether anchorages on the rear outboard seats, but child restraints are not recommended in the rear centre position (no top tether) and not recommended in single cab variants (no top tether anchorages). Vulnerable road user results show mixed head protection (notably poor on stiff windscreen pillars and the bonnet’s front edge), but good leg/pelvis protection and generally good AEB performance for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, with comprehensive driver-assist features including speed sign recognition and strong lane support performance.
